![]() It's hard to plan around far in advance though: That said, I grew up skiing Tahoe and love it. ![]() ![]() Has other people have said, Utah and Colorado have more consistent snow quality. CO and UT have much more developed infrastructure to welcome folks who fly in/out. If I lived far away, I'd only make the trip if there was something compelling to ease the logistics, like great friends, a great place to stay, a guaranteed ride to/from the resorts. IIRC Sugar Bowl, a smaller resort off Donner Summit, has some great above treeline stuff too. Above-tree-line is just one aspect of what makes a particular ski run better or worse. Palisades often closes in mid or late May if the season's been decent.Ĥ) The snow is denser, but that's not a bad thing - it consolidates well, creating simpler/less avy risk in the backcountry, and holds up for months.ĥ) I guess so. If you go in the spring, the roads usually melt out quickly because it doesn't stay cold in the afternoons. Palisades is running a free ski bus from Truckee and from Tahoe City this year, but there's no way it's as reliable as, say, the SLC buses.ģ) You don't need chains on your car with AWD + M+S tires. I think I'll pass.ġ) Correct, Reno is not a major flying destinationĢ) You can hack it with public transit but it's not seamless or frequent. And it's for people traveling from California. It's for people that prefer scenic views over powder. Is it actually worth visiting?ĮDIT: It seems like the general consensus is that it is over-hyped. There is less above the tree-line skiing. If I wanted cement snow I can just stay on the east coast. And it is less frequent than Colorado/Utah. I've been told the snow is like cement. Both Colorado and Utah don't require this for most ski areas-only the trucks have chain laws (at least when I've visited). So even if you rent a car you may not be able to make it to the mountain. I can't just do the trip "on the cheap" like SLC and take the bus and light rail everywhere. Since there's no public transit around the mountains, I'd have to pay $100 a day to rent a car.It seems like the flights to Reno are longer and more expensive than those to Denver or Salt Lake and are not direct. But I am curious if it is worth going to Lake Tahoe? Never been, as I've always just gone to Colorado or Utah. Visit our Discord server!
